Paranormal Book Review Blog: A Most Haunted House

A Most Haunted House by G.L. Davies is, essentially, at its core investigative journalism. The book is presented in a transcript format of interviews the author conducted with the prior inhabitants, John and Sarah (pseudonyms), as well as friends and family, who have experienced happenings in the said house. It was a format that I am not accustomed to, but it did not detract from the reading.

The unsuspecting couple moves into a new house, purchased at an incredible price in a small Welsh town, and as one might expect, knowing the type of book they are reading and the tropes, something is amiss, and soon their lives spiral downward: nice house, new family pet, a loving couple, the price too good to be true. Ah yes, the tell-tale signs of a haunting in the midst.

I am not one to believe in the supernatural, but the interviewees told a convincing tale. Either it was a very good story and blew a whole lot of smoke up you know what, or, they really believed that what they were saying is the God’s-honest truth. That is, after all, the purpose of the book. Neither the real names nor the address of the house are disclosed in the book. On top of that, there were no photos of the house included so that we, the audience might at least catch a glimpse of this house of horrors. But, I understand the author’s reason not to include any photos of the exterior to protect the privacy of the houses’ current (if any) inhabitants. Still, some interior photos would have sufficed as one would not be able to discern nor identify the location just from a few snapshots from within.

I would be remiss if I did not mention that, even though it took me about three nights to finish this book (to be fair I only allowed myself one hour each night to read the book). I woke up the next morning having had a bad dream each night. I am not one to dream often, but after each night of reading the most haunted house, I had what I would consider a bad dream. Make of that what you will. I will include these dreams in another post. Stay tuned. There were more than a few moments throughout the book that sent shivers down my spine. It made me more aware of my surroundings (my bedroom) as I listened, intently, to the sounds the house makes, the sound of wood cracking as the house settles for the night.

Yes, the book delivered the scares but it also allowed us snippets into the lives, and drama, of John and Sarah and how the haunting was affecting their relationship. The haunting, as one might imagine, is an unwelcome circumstance that can wreak havoc and strain on anyone’s life. For the passerby, a visit or an occasional visit to the house may be terrifying, albeit, brief. But still, one is content knowing that they do not live in the said house and spending the night is optional, not obligatory. It is like being the aunt or uncle of a bratty child – you can put up with said child for a brief moment, maybe a couple of hours but you would sleep well that night leaving your niece or nephew to be dealt with to your in-laws. This was not the case for John and Sarah.

The book was a very short read but I would not be able to tell you how short because there are no pages to identify them which was quite perturbing as I like to know where I am in a book – a minor nuisance (96 pages – thank you Amazon).  What I would say was a significant nuisance was the fact that there were numerous spelling and grammatical errors found throughout the book. It was as if the author failed to proofread his work or paid an amateur editor by way of Fivver to do the work for him. No, I have nothing against that, but as a writer and author of a published book, I would want to make sure that all my I’s are dotted, and T’s are crossed before handing it off to the press. My first impression of the book, however, was, of course, its cover. When I received the book, I took note of something peculiar, specifically, the image that was used for the cover of the book. The picture looks as if it was taken on an old cell phone that had a low megapixel count and that was made apparent after having blown it up. A better image could have been used.

Those were just a few gripes that I had to touch on, but, overall I was very entertained and thrilled by A Most Haunted House so much so that I am curious to take a look at the authors’ other works. I only hope that Mr. Davies was able to take note of the errors that plagued this book and remedied them in his follow-up book. All that aside, I recommend giving this book a read despite not fully comprehending the marketing of the book. My impression is that it is a true account of a haunting and it is presented as such. But, the description in the back of the book, states, “Described as chilling and disturbing by some and thought-provoking by others this is one novel that is a must for those interested in the Paranormal.” So, which is it: A true account or a novel? Either way, it is a fun, and often terrifying, read.
