Suck It, Wonder Woman! Book Review

Olivia Munn is an actress, comedian, and television host, best known for being the face of the G4 network.  She also occasionally likes to get dressed up as Wonder Woman. Suck It Wonder Woman is her paean to Geeks everywhere.  Using her trademark humor in essays like Thoughts About My First Agent’s Girlfriend’s Vagina she skewers what it’s like to live in Hollywood.  In Sex: What You Can Do To Help Yourself Have More Of It she frankly gets down to the business of getting it on. In What To Do When The Robots Invade (Yes, When!), Olivia offers valuable information on… what to do when the robots invade! And just when you thought she couldn’t get any more Geeky, she can. This book also includes an Olivia Munn timeline of great moments in Geek history and her answers to the Unofficial Geek FAQ.

Non-Fiction Book Review: Suck It, Wonder Woman!

Olivia, Olivia, Olivia! (sighs)

Browsing the shelves of my local Barnes & Noble via my Nook Color (sorry brick & mortar), I stumbled upon a book whose cover was adorned with the adorable Olivia Munn dressed with a hint of a comic book heroin and its colorful title, Suck It, Wonder Woman! I was a fan of G4′s Attack of the Show before my cable provider took it off the air. Again, being a fan of Attack of the Show and watching Olivia “rise” among the Hollywood ranks (very low-tiered rank), I was curious to learn more about Ms. Munn, so I read the book’s summary and made the purchase. Unfortunately, (spoiler alert) I can’t say it was worth the money spent.

Ok, I spent a measly $9.99, far from breaking the bank. Still, I was extremely disappointed in having discovered the truth (in her own words, mind you) of who Olivia Munn truly was (is). I’ll admit, after reading the first five chapters of the book my mind was set on divorcing my wife (not really) and seeking out this lover of all things geek, especially Star Wars and video games*. She was, and I actually said this to my wife, quote, “One of the guys!”

The book is a collection of Olivia’s short stories, favorite tweets, bad advice for men (relationships in general), top lists of this, that, or the other, horrid sex stories, and a plethora of random experiences that span a lifetime, in no particular order. Don’t get me wrong, the book wasn’t all bad as some moments had me laughing out loud but too few and far between as most of the “humor” seemed to be extremely forced. There was also a chapter in the book that actually saddened and angered me (yes, she was able to instill some emotion in me but I didn’t cry… I swear!) Still, the book fell flat and I’d be hard-pressed to recommend this one to anyone even though it was “mildly entertaining”.

*Disclaimer: I am not a video game geek but appreciate the brief escape from reality from time-to-time and sometimes laughing harder than I ever have while my cousin embarrasses himself on XBox Live. For the most part, I am merely a spectator as I, myself, am no good. But, the notion of a woman playing video games is mild testimony of her “being down”, or cool, in the eyes of many of the opposite sex
